[edit: This is another great link/resource for grids: 960 Grid System]

[edit: And yet another great resource for website layouts, basically fluid grids, Layout Gala.] “The Ultimate Resource of Grid Systems”. I love this website, here’s why:

The grid system is an aid, not a guarantee. It permits a number of possible uses and each designer can look for a solution appropriate to his personal style. But one must learn how to use the grid; it is an art that requires practice.” Josef Müller-Brockmann

Look at a good design it’s easy to tell if a grid was applied or not. Does it make sense? Grids are a framework that, at first, appear limiting. Don’t put me in a box, a designer might say.But after using them for a few short minutes you realise their power to organise and help you make decisions about your design.

Imagine, creatively, that you are God and you must create a universe. What would you do first?I’d say she would have started with a Grid system. Then she would have rested on day 2 instead of day 7. Look at any book, magazine or newspaper and you’ll see examples of Grids in action. Look up the “Rule of Thirds” (photography term) and you’ll see another great example.

Grid it, I say.
